Marci brings a wonderful combination of expert writing skill, community knowledge and creative brainstorming to her role as associate editor of Canandaigua Magazine. We chose her over a slew of candidates for the position, and she has done more to add to the spirit and voice of the magazine than we could have hoped. Beyond that, she is such a genuine and warm presence. We have such great confidence in her, and feel extremely lucky to have found her.”

Why Poor Writing is Like Chewed Bread.                     With Toads.

Via The-American-Interest.com

There are a lot of people out there who apparently think that  good language skills aren't important.

This drives me insane. So insane, I end up looking like an angry toad.

The idea that "people don't care -- they just want to get the information" or "It doesn't matter now, with quick bites consumed via social media" -- is just plain poor thinking.

In fact, it's dangerous thinking. Especially if you're in business.

Good communication indicates intelligent life. It's part of being human to make a judgement about a person based on what we hear. Same goes for web content, blogs, advertising, marketing material... the list goes on.

There are whole websites out there pointing out the horrible, misleading and usually hilarious mistakes in spelling, grammar, punctuation that exist – and making fun of the businesses that made them.

You don’t want that to be you!!

Try thinking of how your communications -- of any kind -- make an impression:

What if you were going out to the most important meeting of your life? The meeting that would bring you what you most need or desire?

You want to look your best, make a great first impression. But what if there’s a glaring detail that could ruin it?

  • You have globs of bread between your teeth.
  • Your shoes don’t match.
  • You have a spot on that tie.
  • You wearing that?
  • Your zipper's undone.
  • Every time you open your mouth, toads pop out.

     Or much, much worse.

Wouldn’t it be a lifesaver if you had someone to check things over and make sure you look and sound absolutely perfect?  Wouldn’t you have more confidence? You could go out and Nail IT!

This is the same thing as putting your content and site out there – or any communication – and having typos, spelling mistakes, grammatical tangles and unclear thoughts and messages.

Why do you need a copywriter and editor? Here's just one of many reasons:

So you won’t appear at that vital meeting – the meeting with your client and customers that  you have every moment on the web, in print, in social media – with a mouth full of toads.
